Mathematics

At Newlaithes Nursery and Infant School, the children and staff love mathematics (maths).

We teach our children following a mastery mathematics approach- with the ethos that 'all children can!'

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) describe mastery maths as "Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths. Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material."

Children at Newlaithes Nursery and Infant School are provided with the opportunities to access the EYFS framework and National Curriculum. Children 'keep up- not catch up'.

In EYFS (Nursery and Reception) we follow the EYFS Framework with a very recent update to the framework in September 2021. Children in Reception access Number and Numerical Patterns through the deliverance of the 'Mastering Number Programme' which has been developed by the NCETM. Further areas of the mathematics EYFS framework are delivered through the teacher's planning and throughout continuous provision.

Children in year 1 and year 2 are taught the National Curriculum through Maths No Problem. In addition children in year 1 and year 2 also follow the 'Mastering Number Programme'. This programme progresses throughout the years, with clear links and developments of the previous year.

Mr Pow is our Mathematic coordinator. He also supports other schools with their mastery mathematics development journey and Mastering Number Programme as he is a Primary Maths Mastery Specialist teacher for the NCETM.
