Reading

At Newlaithes Nursery & Infants we love reading!

The children are taught the sounds letters make during their phonic sessions. We follow 'Read, Write inc' to teach phonics.

Mr Wilkinson is our Reading Leader and is supported by our Literacy co-ordinator Mrs Kerr. You are welcome to contact him for any help and advice about reading with your child.

Phonics is important, but activities throughout the year, and in our annual book week, also help the children develop a love of books. Every Monday in assembly is 'Fairytale Monday' This is a chance for all our children to become familiar with well-loved traditional tales. Our school library is at the heart of our school and all staff have worked hard to make it the best it can be. Children and their families are welcome every Friday after school to borrow as many books as they wish! Our morning book club is popular with the children too.

The children listen to stories every day. Each year group has identified a core set of books that they want your child to become familiar with. We want our children to love reading so they will continue to thrive beyond their time with us.
