  • School Council

Our school council members have the very important job of representing not only their class and year group, but also the whole school.

The children decide if they would like to stand to become a school council member and their classmates take part in a secret ballot to choose who the best candidate will be. Before the vote the children learn about opinions and that it's fine to have a different opinion to your classmates. They also learn about voting and how it's best to vote for the person you think will do the best job, rather than just voting for your best friend.

Our school council are involved in decision making in school and they often have to ask their classmates for their thoughts and opinions too.

The year 2 rangers who help every week on the playgrounds were originally part of a school council project. The work our school council had done to improve playtimes was recognised by The Speaker of the House of Commons in the Speaker's Schools Council Awards. Although we didn't win overall the children's Newlaithes Rangers project was a finalist. A great example of our school history in action! It is wonderful to see the children still being recognised for promoting kindness in celebration assembly each Friday.
